Hey there, I'm Back.....Anything to keep me from doing my uni work.... It's Sat and I so wanna go out but unless I want to neglect my loved ones of a Xmas pressie this year I will have to stay in :( Anyway, thought I would write a little bit about my transplant that I received in October 2004.
I had only been on the transplant list for 6 weeks, when I received the call. I still remember it pretty clearly to this day, I was just 17 and I was just about to leave the house for my driving lesson when my mobile and house phone rang simultaneously. I answered it and it was a doctor from the hosp saying that they had a kidney for it and then said "so you up for that?" I was just in shock and was like eehhh yea! So had to call my driving instructor who was waiting outside, and he said, "so u won't be back next wk then?? eh.........no!
so I called my dad who was out (as everyone is when you need them lol) and i told him that they had a kidney for me to which he replied..." your a bit tiddly???" no dad!?.........a kidney.
So fast forward all that polava, I finally reached the hospital and to receive a transplant there is pretty commonplace so there was no big hoo haa which was a welcome relief for me as I hate, a fuss. I just prefer to get on with it. Now these details are a bit hazy as it was 4 years ago and a LOT has happened since then!
So when you get called for a transplant there is still no certainties even when you are at the hosp, the cross match is still got to be carried out and a negative result has to be the outcome to TRY to make the risk of acute rejection as low as poss. So basically you get bloods done, chest xray, examination of the proposed transplant site em........... they also have to decide wheter you need dialysis depending on your bloods. I never needed dialysis so it was just the wait for the cross match which takes about 5 hours.
Fast forward 5 hours of much trepidation and worry ( I have to add not from me but from my family) the result was negative and the transplant was going ahead. I can't remember exactly what time this was but I can remember I was absolutely starving having being nil by mouth
I finally went down to theatre about midnight, really nervous now but it doesn't last for long as you are soon knocked out. and the next thing I knew I was waking up completely groggy and on another planet of anaesthetic and morphine where the sun always seems to shine!
Back up on the ward and thankfully everything went to plan and me little kidney seemed to be pretty happy in it's new home and started working straight away so no need for anymore dialysis.
Now its just the tricky business of getting better and getting up and walking and achieving the fine balance between all the tablets, of which you have to take about a million every day...seriously!
I started to get back up on my feet and eating again, which is something i never seem to have a problem doing?!! lol I felt absolutely brilliant and fabulous and great a few days feeling a bit chesty and sick but apart from that life was peachy.
I was allowed home exactly a week after my transplant and just settled into the routine of tablets and clinic. You surprisingly recover pretty quickly and within maybes about a month I was feeling happy strong and healthy.
Thankfully my kidney was working well and I had no complications whatsoever which was a blessing, and all in all life was Rosy.
Well I think I'll continue this wee tale later...............Adios Lxxxx
